An integration of both a pharmaceutical approach to treatment paired with behavioral therapy is considered the most effective method of treatment for opiate addiction. Behavioral therapies include outpatient treatment approaches that combine individual and group counseling to meet the individual needs of the patient. Other Behavioral Therapies include:

Contingency Management

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Each of these types of behavioral therapy works to change behaviors and restore a degree of normalcy to those who suffer from opiate addiction. Behavioral therapy is considered highly effective at treating heroin and other opiate addiction cases when paired with a medication intervention or pharmaceutical approach.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Treatment and Its Benefits

An addiction is nothing to take lightly. It can change lives—and never for the better. There are, perhaps, as many reasons why a person becomes addicted as there are people. Each person is unique, and so will the circumstances be that lead to their addiction. Thus, it stands to reason that treatment for each addict should be tailored to their specific needs.

Counseling for drug and alcohol addiction is just as important as detox and a robust rehab program. Rehab centers can perform the necessary physical and mental exams quite easily. However, if there is an underlying mental issue, undiscovered during detox and rehab, the patient is in danger of relapsing at some point in the future. This is never desirable. There is such a thing as an addiction psychology that must be addressed if a patient is to navigate rehab successfully.

Initially, an individual applies to rehab on their own accord, and sometimes as a result of a criminal proceeding. Whatever the reason, a rehab center will conduct a thorough physical and mental assessment. Detox is by far the most difficult part of rehab for many patients. Their mind and body have grown used to a particular substance. The fact remains their mind may have been physically altered as well. This can compound their addiction.

What Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Provides

Well into rehab, behavioral therapy addresses the addict’s behavior and attempts to identify the triggers that lead to the addiction in the first place. If a person has trouble understanding the underlying causes of their addiction, it makes it easier for them to bond with their rehab treatments.

Counseling can take form as an individual, family, or group modality. Some patients enjoy the discovery of learning that others have gone through the same experiences. Counseling can sometimes create a lifetime bond between patients. Of course, whatever patients experience in counseling or therapy is private.

Aftercare and support are also essential for a patient’s continual and ongoing recovery. Sometimes, the fight for sobriety lasts a lifetime. For that patient, it is a good thing that support is available along with organizations like Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The associations are free to join. The only thing requested of individuals is their true desire to remain drug or alcohol free. If a person relapses, they are always encouraged to get right back in the saddle and to attend rehab again. Rehab, along with cognitive behavioral therapy, works.
